Learing Experience from Oasis New Member Kit

Thanks for Derek and Betty's invitation. It's my great pleasure to leave my first message in Oasis's blog.

My name is Kit, a new member who joined Oasis in November 2010. Joining Oasis is an intimidating experience for me, because public speaking has long been my weakness since school days. It’s after some struggle and consideration that I finally decided to take the plunge.

To say a little bit about my feelings about joining Oasis, I have learned a lot through the few meetings I attended. And I truly love the atmosphere of Oasis. It's friendly, encouraging, supportive, and fun. I can see and feel it every time I attend the meeting. On top of all these, it's great to have other eight new members (and those who newly joined) learning with me together. Thanks Oasis and all the members for giving me such a great learning opportunity! And I am looking forward to the next meeting.

Tongue Twitter Challenge, Toastmasters Challenge by Betty Law

I’m Betty and joined Oasis Toastmasters Club since Nov, 2010.  The experience in Toastmasters club for me is always Fresh, Challenging and Inspiring.  Oasis is FUN!

Last week, I joined Toastmaster Open Day on 29 January, 2011.  It’s first time I can see many seasoned toastmasters from Division H, K, G giving their speeches in English, Mandarin and Cantonese respectively.

Surely, our club president Derek and chief mentor KF also delivered speeches sharing their experience of running 2 clubs (what a hard job!) and running in-house club for the corporation.

Apart from prepared speeches, those seasoned toastmasters also demonstrated delivery of short speeches for table topic, i.e. impromptu speech.  Since Chinese New Year is approaching, the topics were all related to our fortune, such as 花運 (I really don’t know what it is called in English.) happiness and health.

Furthermore, there was a section of the tongue twitter challenge in Cantonese and English.  “Fish Fries Fresh? Fresh Fish Fries?”  My tongue already twisted after taking part of this section.

Guests, members, organizers all enjoyed this function very much and I can’t wait to join our next meeting of Oasis in February.

6 New Oasians explore their Leadership Potential at COT 8 JAN 2011

Today I just saw a group of new oasians, Betty, Jess, Kit, Leo, Robin and Wilson, attent the Club Officers Training to learn and explore their leadership skills.

I saw our potential committee members were dreaming.
They dreamed about the way they walked though project by project,
They dreamed about what they could contribute to Oasis,
They committed:
To Attend every meeting?
To Take every role?
To Achieve CC?
To Achieve CL as well as taking every role once?
To Attend contest?
To Visit club and special training?

As a seasoned member in club, I would suggest you to take out your CL manual, see how you can collect points to achieve CL, and suggest you to plan your own schedule to finish CC, such as 1.5 years, if you take a quick look of CC manual, you will see there are lots of important skills you will gain in public speaking and don't forget the core value of toastmasters is public speaking.
Keep it up, our future new blood of Oasis

Steve, VPM
